CYK presents at CECJ Conference
Focus on CIS at recent Law Society event
4 October 2018: Partner Dan Burbeary recently led a team from CYK in presenting to a group of Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakh lawyers at the Law Society as part of a three day European Centre for Legal Cooperation (CECJ) conference. The CYK team, which has an increasingly active practice relating to the CIS, also included partner Marc Keidan, senior associate Matthew Gale and associate Irina Buydova. They presented in English and Russian on the jurisdictional challenges parties may face when litigating in England and Wales. The presentation focused on how recent English case law treated the important concept of domicile under the Recast Brussels Regulation as well as looking at the relevant legal gateways to establishing jurisdiction of the English courts.
Matthew also had the opportunity to participate in a further series of working meetings on 20 September, where delegates, with the assistance of a translator, participated in a workshop made up of a number of round table sessions. The round table format allowed participants to exchange ideas about their respective jurisdictions and practices with each other and offered a good insight into the perspective of CIS-clients and their lawyers who bring or defend legal proceedings in this jurisdiction.
